Glossary of Terms

Employee Assistance programme:
Refers to an internal or external service that provides advice and/or counselling in relation to well-being, addiction and mental health issues.

Previous Experience of Employing People with Disabilities:
This may be positive or negative.

Boardroom Commitment:
Refers to high-level commitment within the organisation to employ people with disabilities.

Opinions of Staff and Colleagues:
Refers to supportive opinions of staff with regard to employing people with disabilities.

Expectation of Impact on Productivity:
Refers to the organisation expecting that employing people with disabilities will have an impact (positive or negative) on productivity.

Public Image of the Organisation:
Refers to the organisation believing that employing people with disabilities will improve the image of the organisation with the general public.

Impact on Staff Morale:
Refers to the organisation believing that employing people with disabilities will have an impact (positive or negative) on staff morale.

Insurance Costs:
Refers to the belief by an organisation that employing people with disabilities will impact (positively or negatively) on insurance costs.

Impact on Employee Maintenance Costs:
Refers to the belief that employing people with disabilities will reduce the costs of retaining people in the workforce since people with disabilities tend to stay longer with their employer.

Impact on Workload of Other Employees:
Refers to the belief that employing people with disabilities will have an impact (positively or negatively) on the workload of other employees.

Factors Associated with the Employee with a Disability:
Refers to any issues (positive or negative) associated with the person that may have influenced the decision to employ or not to employ.

The Example of Competitors:
Refers to competitors employing people with disabilities and the influence this might have on the decision to employ a person with disabilities.

The Influence of the Social Partners:
Refers to national or secoral level agreements (i.e. agreements outside of the organisation) between employers and trade unions in relation to employing people with disabilities. 

The State of the Economy:
Refers to the general state of the economy and the influence it may have on employing people with disabilities (in particular to economies with a high level of employment opportunities). 

Legal Requirements to Employ People with Disabilities:
Refers to the impact that employment quotas may have on employing people with disabilities.

Financial Incentives:
Monetary support that encourages or motivates somebody to do something

Financial Incentives from the State:
Refers to the impact of financial incentives (e.g. grants, subsidies) on decisions to employ people with disabilities.

Financial Penalties from the State:
Refers to the impact of financial penalties (e.g. fines or levies for not meeting employment quotas) on decisions to employ people with disabilities.

Labour Shortages:
Refers to a shortage of labour in the local/regional/national economy.

State Training Supports:
Refers to the impact of State sponsored training supports for people with disabilities i.e. the availability of externally provided training that ensures that the person with a disability is appropriately qualified for the job.
